Muscle Sparing Knee Replacement

What is Muscle Sparing Knee Replacement?

As our understanding of knee replacements evolve, so do our techniques. Minimally invasive muscle sparing knee replacement lessens bone and tissue trauma and improves patient outcomes.

Minimally invasive muscle sparing knee replacement includes the following:

  • Smaller incision around 4-6 inches- (compared to traditional 10-12 inches)

  • No muscle cutting- (compared to traditional techniques which cut the quadricep tendon and split the muscle)

  • Avoid compression tourniquet around the thigh during the surgery- (less thigh pain and weakness after surgery)

  • Avoid general anesthesia and breathing tube (regional blocks numbing the leg)

  • Reduced post-operative pain

  • Bone preserving implants- (less bone cut during surgery)

  • No walker or cane on average 2 weeks after surgery

  • Same day discharge home- (if the patient desires)
